What are dental implants?

Dental implants are titanium posts that Dr. Kim places beneath your gums during an outpatient procedure. Over time, the implants fuse with your jaw, providing a sturdy foundation for dental restorations like crowns, bridges, or overdentures. 

Dental implants are much more durable and longer-lasting than dentures. With good oral hygiene and routine checkups, they often last a lifetime.

Can anyone get dental implants?

Dental implants are safe and typically well-tolerated, but they aren’t for everyone. To get implants, you need healthy gums and enough jaw bone to support them. If you have gingivitis or low bone volume, Dr. Kim might recommend periodontal treatment or a bone graft first.

During your first appointment, let Dr. Kim know if you have any underlying health problems like heart disease or high blood pressure. These conditions won’t prevent you from getting implants, but they may increase the risk of complications, like implant failure. 

What does getting dental implants involve?

Getting dental implants takes between 6-12* months and a series of appointments. 

At your first consultation, Dr. Kim conducts an oral exam and asks about your goals for treatment. Then, he takes oral X-rays to assess the health and condition of your gums, existing teeth, and jaw. 

If your gums and jaw are healthy, Dr. Kim administers a local anesthetic and places one or more implants beneath your gums. The number of implants you get depends on the number of teeth missing and the type of restoration you want. 

Following placement, your mouth heals for several months, and the implant(s) fuse with your jaw. When the process finishes, you return to New City Dental Care, and Dr. Kim takes digital impressions of your mouth.

He sends your impressions to a dental laboratory that makes your crown, bridge, or overdenture. Several weeks later, you return to the office, and Dr. Kim attaches your restoration to the implant. Afterward, he polishes it and provides you with care instructions.

How do I care for dental implants?

You care for dental implants like they’re your permanent teeth. Dr. Kim recommends brushing and flossing daily and visiting the office twice a year for an oral exam and professional teeth cleaning. To prevent chips, cracks, and other types of damage, avoid bad habits like nail-biting or opening objects with your teeth.
