Invisalign Q&A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign gradually straightens your teeth and jaw with a series of clear aligners. The SmartTrack® aligners are a thermoplastic that’s free of chemicals, making Invisalign safe for pregnant women and people with allergies.

Treatment with Invisalign is discreet and hassle-free. Because the aligners are removable, you can continue to eat your favorite snacks, including would-be no-nos with traditional braces like apple slices, nuts, and seeds.

What types of issues can Invisalign correct?

Dr. Kim typically recommends Invisalign to correct mild and moderate alignment issues, including:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Crowding
  • Underbite
  • Overbite
  • Open bite
  • Gaps between teeth

Dr. Kim also uses Invisalign to correct malpositioned jaws.

What does Invisalign treatment involve?

Treatment with Invisalign begins with an in-office consultation. During your appointment, Dr. Kim conducts an oral exam and asks about your goals. Then, he takes digital impressions of your mouth with an intraoral scanner.

Dr. Kim uploads your impressions to a design program and develops a custom orthodontic treatment plan that maps out the movement of your teeth and jaw. He then sends your designs to a dental laboratory that manufactures your first set of aligners.

About a week later, you return to the office and try them on. Dr. Kim makes adjustments as necessary and provides you with care instructions.

Throughout treatment, you wear the aligners for 20-22 hours each day, returning to New City Dental Care every two or three weeks to change into a new pair. The aligners place mild pressure on your teeth and jaw, moving them into the proper position.

How long does treatment with Invisalign take?

Treatment with Invisalign typically takes between 6-12* months, but it can take longer. To achieve the best possible outcome, follow Dr. Kim’s instructions and attend each checkup. Only remove your aligners to eat or clean them and be very careful when handling them to prevent damage.

Do I need to clean my Invisalign aligners?

Invisalign aligners collect plaque, tartar, and food particles just like your teeth. To prevent buildup, Dr. Kim recommends rinsing them off in cool tap water several times a day and brushing them with a soft-bristle toothbrush before going to bed at night. For more thorough cleanings, ask Dr. Kim about the Invisalign cleaning system.
